Making a bathroom safe and handicap wheelchair accessible is an important first step when beginning an accessible home modification. Recently, Camco Construction, Inc. redesigned a a bathroom to make it handicap wheelchair accessible for an aging client.
This client needed a face lift for their bathroom, including upgrades adding handicap accessible shower, grab bars, and ADA compliant elongated toilet bowl. This project posed a few challenges. The doorway was too narrow to allow a wheelchair through, had a bathtub that the client was not able to step into making it unusable, the sink and vanity would not accommodate the wheelchair, the toilet was too low, and the heating and electrical needed to be moved around for the remodel.
The bathroom needed a redesign to incorporate the updated plumbing needed for the walk in shower and proper spacing, moving the toilet, replacing the vanity, updated the flooring to something more resistant to slipping, rerouting the HVAC and vents, as well as installing proper GFCI electrical. We also widened the entry to accommodate a 36 inch doorway so the client could get in and out in a wheelchair. Our client was able to come home to a fresh bathroom that was safe and functional for their needs.
